A practical grooming routine for the American Eskimo Dog: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Brush two or three times a week with a pin brush and an undercoat rake, and daily during the two big seasonal sheds. Pay special attention to the ruff, behind the ears and the feathering on the back legs, where tangles start. Helpfully, the coat's texture tends to release dirt once it dries, so dried mud often brushes out without a bath.
Bathe every six to eight weeks and dry thoroughly, since a damp undercoat can irritate the skin. Reddish tear stains under the eyes are common on white dogs; gently wiping the area daily with a damp cloth helps, and heavy staining or constant watering is worth mentioning to your vet. Trim nails monthly and brush teeth regularly, especially in toys, whose small mouths are prone to dental problems.
