American Staffordshire Terrier feeding guide: how much and how often

Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the American Staffordshire Terrier.

AmStaffs are usually keen, fast eaters with plenty of muscle to fuel, but they lay down fat quickly when life gets quiet. A 28 kg (62 lb) male with daily exercise typically needs around 300 to 380 g of a typical dry food a day, roughly 3 to 4 cups. Adjust by shape rather than the bag: you want a visible waist and a tuck behind the ribs, not a barrel.

Plenty of owners find the breed prone to itchy skin and sensitive stomachs. If you notice scratching, paw licking or loose stools, keep a simple diary of everything eaten and discuss it with your vet before hopping between foods. Any change should happen gradually over about a week.

Because they eat quickly, a slow feeder or a sturdy food puzzle earns its place. Choose heavy stainless steel or ceramic, since an AmStaff can reduce a thin plastic bowl to pieces in one afternoon.
