How much exercise does a Basenji need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Basenji enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
About 60 minutes of daily activity suits most adults, combining brisk walks with play and, where possible, secure off-leash sprinting. Lure coursing is a natural fit: the dogs chase a mechanical lure across a field at speed, which satisfies the chase drive safely. Agility, scent games and flirt pole play are also popular.
Never trust a Basenji off leash in unfenced areas. It can vanish after a squirrel in seconds and may not come back when called. Fencing should be at least 1.8 m (6 ft) and free of footholds, since many Basenjis climb chain link. They dislike cold and wet weather, so a warm coat on winter walks helps, and many will refuse to go out in heavy rain.
