How much exercise does an Australian Shepherd need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities an Australian Shepherd enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Plan for at least 90 minutes of activity a day for a healthy adult, and a good share of that should involve thinking rather than just moving. A solid day might combine a 45-minute off-lead run in a safe area, 15 minutes of trick or obedience work, and a food puzzle in the afternoon. Agility, herding instinct tests, flyball, canicross and disc sports all suit the breed.
An under-exercised Aussie makes its feelings known: pacing, barking at small noises, chewing door frames, chasing shadows or reflections, and nipping at ankles. Watch for the opposite problem too. Some Aussies are so driven that they will keep fetching through soreness or overheating, so it is up to you to end the session. Heavy panting that won't settle, a lagging gait or lying down in the shade are signs to stop, and on warm days it is wiser to exercise at dawn or dusk.
