Training an Australian Shepherd: what works and what to expect

How the Australian Shepherd learns, common training challenges and what motivates it.

Aussies learn fast, which is both a gift and a trap. They pick up bad habits just as quickly as good ones, and they notice patterns you never meant to teach, such as the fact that barking at the window makes you get up. Short, varied sessions of 5 to 10 minutes, rewarded with food or a quick game of tug, work far better than long drills.

Two things need early attention. The first is socialization: between 8 and 16 weeks, let the puppy meet many calm people, surfaces, sounds and friendly dogs, because the breed's natural reserve can harden into suspicion. The second is impulse control. Teach a solid settle on a mat, a reliable recall and a leave-it, and redirect heel nipping into a toy game so the herding urge has somewhere to go. Harsh handling tends to backfire with this sensitive breed.
