Australian Shepherd puppy growth: milestones and weight estimates
How fast an Australian Shepherd puppy grows, illustrative weight estimates and the limits of predicting adult size.
Aussie puppies grow quickly for their first six months, often reaching about two-thirds of adult weight by then. Height is mostly finished by 12 months, but chest, muscle and coat keep filling out until around 16 to 18 months, and young males can look lanky and leggy for a while in between.
The biggest growth mistake is too much repetitive, high-impact exercise. Long runs on pavement, endless ball chasing and jumping from heights all strain developing joints. Free play on soft ground, short training sessions and gentle exploration are better until the growth plates close, usually around 12 to 14 months. Many breeders suggest waiting for that point, and for hip and elbow checks, before starting full-height agility jumps. A puppy that limps for more than a day or seems stiff after rest should see a vet.
