Training an Azawakh: what works and what to expect

Azawakhs are intelligent but independent, and they respond poorly to repetition or pressure. Short, relaxed sessions with food rewards and plenty of trust building work best. Expect them to ask why before complying; many learn quickly but choose when to show it. Harsh corrections can permanently damage the relationship with this sensitive breed.

The priorities are socialization, handling and recall practice in enclosed spaces. Teach your dog from puppyhood to accept being touched by vets and groomers, rewarding calm behavior during examinations. Tell visitors not to reach for the dog but to let it approach in its own time. Some Azawakhs guard their home and people, so professional guidance is wise if defensive behavior develops.
