Basenji feeding guide: how much and how often

Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Basenji.

A 10 kg adult with moderate activity typically needs 550 to 700 kcal a day, which is about 140 to 180 g of a typical dry food (roughly 1.5 to 2 cups). Basenjis are built lean and athletic, with a clear tuck behind the ribs, so aim to keep that outline rather than following the bag chart blindly.

They are skilled food thieves, capable of jumping onto counters, climbing shelves and nosing open cupboards. Secure food storage and bins, and never leave a plate unattended. Two meals a day suits most adults, and puzzle feeders or scattering kibble in the garden turn meals into a hunting game this breed genuinely enjoys.

Get to know your dog's normal water intake. Because some Basenji lines carry a kidney disorder, a noticeable rise in drinking or urinating is something to raise with your vet rather than ignore.
