Training a Basenji: what works and what to expect

Basenjis are bright but were bred to hunt independently, making their own decisions far from human direction. They often seem to ask what they gain from a request, and they lose interest in repeated drills quickly. Short sessions of three to five repetitions, high-value food rewards and plenty of variety work best. Harsh methods tend to produce a dog that avoids you.

Expect challenges with recall, chewing and escaping. Crate training helps with house training and prevents damage when you cannot supervise. Teach a strong wait at doors and gates, since bolting through an open door is a common way these dogs get lost. Progress may be slower than with a retriever, but consistency and creativity make a real difference.
