Puppies grow steadily and usually reach adult height at around 10 to 12 months, but the full chest, coat and adult outlook arrive closer to 18 to 24 months. Males in particular keep filling out through their second year.
The coat changes a lot during growth. Many puppies are darker, with black-tipped hairs that fade as the red adult coat grows through. Use the early months to get the puppy comfortable with brushing, having its feet handled and settling quietly, since habits formed now tend to stick.
