Boerboel health: what owners should know

Boerboels are known to be predisposed to hip and elbow dysplasia, eyelid problems such as entropion and ectropion, some heart conditions and bloat. As with many giant breeds, lifespan is modest, usually 9 to 11 years. Responsible breeders hip and elbow score both parents, have eyes examined, may also have hearts checked, and talk openly about temperament in their lines.

Protect the joints by keeping your dog lean for life. Know the signs of bloat: a swollen or tight belly, unproductive retching, restlessness and drooling mean going to a vet immediately. See a vet as well for persistent lameness, squinting or eye discharge, coughing, or unusual tiredness on walks.
