Borzoi feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Borzoi.
Borzoi adults typically eat 300 to 450 g of a typical dry food daily, around 3 to 4.5 cups, depending on size and activity. Many are picky or light eaters. A healthy Borzoi looks lean, with the last couple of ribs and the hip bones faintly visible, and owners new to sighthounds often worry their dog is too thin when it is in ideal shape. Ask your vet to show you what good condition looks like on your own dog.
The deep chest puts Borzois at risk of bloat, so feed two or more smaller meals, avoid running soon after eating and watch for gulping. A very tall dog may find it more comfortable to eat from a bowl set at roughly the height of its lower chest than to fold down to the floor, but talk to your vet before raising bowls, since research on raised feeding and bloat is mixed.
Because appetite can be fickle, learn your own dog's normal pattern. A normally keen eater that refuses two meals in a row, or skips food alongside lethargy or vomiting, should see a vet.
