A working adult of 27 to 32 kg (60 to 70 lb) often needs about 350 to 450 g of a typical dry food daily, around 3.5 to 4.5 cups, and more during a heavy hunting season. Pet dogs with less activity may need 20 to 30% less. Wirehairs usually stay lean while active, but the coat hides changes, so feel the ribs with your hands every couple of weeks.
Feed two meals a day and leave at least an hour between a meal and hard work, as the deep chest brings some bloat risk. Water intake jumps after field work, so offer small amounts often rather than letting the dog gulp a huge volume in one go. A heavy, stable bowl that will not skid is worth having, since a thirsty Wirehair drinks with enthusiasm.
