Saluki puppies grow rapidly, reach most of their adult height by about 12 months and then fill out slowly until around 2 years. Along the way they often look all legs, with a narrow chest and a gait that seems to need more coordination than they have. A 12-week-old puppy commonly weighs around 7 to 9 kg.
Free play in a safe, enclosed space, where puppies sprint and stop as they choose, is better for growing bodies than long, forced runs before 12 months. Socialize carefully with calm people, places and gentle dogs, because Salukis can become shy if under-socialized. Limping, reluctance to run or yelping when touched should be checked by a vet.
