How much exercise does a Cairn Terrier need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Cairn Terrier enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
About 45 to 60 minutes a day keeps most adult Cairns content, broken into two walks and some play. They love exploring, so a varied route with new smells beats the same circuit every day. Terrier-friendly games include flirt poles, hunting for treats hidden in a cardboard box, and earthdog trials, where dogs work tunnels to find a caged rat safely.
Fences need to be sound at the bottom, not just high, because a bored Cairn will dig under within an afternoon. A digging box filled with sand in one corner of the garden is a popular compromise. Too little exercise usually shows as barking and excavation; a genuinely overtired Cairn is rare, but short legs do mean long hikes should be built up gradually.
