Growth is quick. Most Cairn puppies reach close to adult size by eight to ten months and finish filling out by their first birthday. A 12-week-old pup often weighs around 3 kg. The puppy coat is soft and fluffy, and the harsh adult coat usually begins coming through between six and twelve months, often with a noticeable color shift.
Young terriers of several breeds, including Cairns, can develop a painful jaw bone condition between roughly four and eight months of age. Contact your vet if a puppy has swelling along the jaw, seems reluctant to chew or open its mouth, or cries when eating. Otherwise, sensible growth habits apply: steady weight, lots of play on soft ground and no forced long runs before 12 months.
