Training a Welsh Springer Spaniel: what works and what to expect

Welsh Springers learn quickly but are sensitive, reading tone and body language closely. Rewards of food, toys and praise work far better than corrections, and short, varied sessions keep them engaged. A harshly handled Welshie tends to become anxious or simply switch off.

The usual challenges are recall around scent, distress at being left alone, and shyness with strangers. Build recall on a long line with high-value rewards, practice short absences from the first weeks, and make meetings with new people pleasant and unhurried. Even hobby-level gundog training, such as retrieving a dummy from cover, gives this breed a deep sense of satisfaction.
