Field Spaniel grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Field Spaniel: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Brush 2 or 3 times a week, working through the ear leather, chest and leg feathering with a comb to catch tangles before they turn into mats. Trim the hair on the underside of the ears and around the ear opening to help air circulate, and keep feet tidy by trimming the hair between the pads. Many owners book a groomer every 8 to 12 weeks for a neat outline.
Avoid clipping the body coat, which can spoil its silky texture for good. Check and clean ears weekly and dry them thoroughly after swimming. Trim nails every 3 to 4 weeks. Shedding is moderate and fairly steady through the year.
