English Springer Spaniel grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the English Springer Spaniel: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Brush two or three times a week with a slicker brush and a metal comb, paying special attention to the feathering behind the ears, in the armpits and on the back legs where mats form. Many pet owners have the feathering and feet tidied every eight to ten weeks, which makes mud far easier to deal with. Shedding is moderate year-round, with heavier spells in spring and autumn.
The ears are the real priority. Heavy flaps limit airflow, so wipe the inside after swimming and check weekly for smell, redness or dark wax. After summer walks, run your hands through the coat and between the toes for burrs, ticks and grass seeds. Head shaking, a held-up paw or sudden licking of one foot suggests something may be lodged, and a vet should take a look.
