How much exercise does an English Springer Spaniel need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities an English Springer Spaniel enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Most adult Springers need 90 to 120 minutes of activity daily, with part of it off lead in a safe area. Work that uses the nose tires them far faster than running alone: hide a canvas dummy in long grass, lay a short scent trail, or teach a search game in the garden. Gundog training, scentwork classes, agility and flyball all suit the breed well.
An under-exercised Springer is easy to spot: whining, pacing, chewing door frames or barking at every sound. Overdoing it is rarer but happens with keen working dogs; watch for stiffness the next morning, sore pads or reluctance to jump into the car. Springers seldom stop voluntarily while hunting, so on warm days you must schedule water breaks and shade for them.
