Ibizan Hound health: what owners should know

Ibizan Hounds are generally healthy. Conditions reported in the breed include deafness, seizures, allergies, eye problems and, rarely, axonal dystrophy. Like other sighthounds, they may be sensitive to anesthesia due to low body fat, so choose a vet familiar with sighthounds and mention the breed before any procedure.

A simple hearing check at home, such as calling softly from behind while the puppy is awake and relaxed, can flag a problem early, though only a BAER test confirms it. Contact your vet for any seizure, a puppy that seems not to hear, itching that keeps your dog awake, a cloudy or weeping eye, or weight loss in a hound that is already naturally slim.
