Plott Hound feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Plott Hound.
An active adult of about 25 kg (55 lb) typically eats 330 to 400 g of dry food a day, roughly 3.3 to 4 cups. Hounds that hunt through the season may need noticeably more, and pet dogs with lighter routines less. Most Plotts eat eagerly, so measure portions rather than filling the bowl.
Like other deep-chested breeds, Plotts are at some risk of bloat, where the stomach fills with gas and can twist. Feeding two or three smaller meals, resting the dog for about an hour before and after hard exercise, and using a slow feeder for gulpers are common precautions. Raised bowls do not prevent bloat; one large study linked them with higher risk in large breeds.
Know the emergency signs: a swollen, tight belly, repeated attempts to vomit with nothing coming up, drooling and restlessness. Any of these needs an emergency vet immediately, day or night.
