Lagotto Romagnolo grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Lagotto Romagnolo: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
The curly coat sheds very little but needs steady care. Comb through every week or so with a slicker and a metal comb, gently opening the curls down to the skin and removing tangles. Check for burrs and grass seeds after walks, particularly around the ears and feet. Brushing the whole coat daily with a slicker tends to fluff it out and spoil the curls, so work section by section and only as often as needed.
Clip the whole coat every two to three months to around 4 cm (1.5 in). Left longer, it cords and felts into mats that pull on the skin. Bathe only when necessary and dry well. Trim the hair inside the ear flaps and dry the ears after swimming, since damp ears can become irritated. Keep nails short and the hair between the pads neat.
