Puppies grow steadily and reach adult height at about 10 to 12 months, then fill out until around 15 to 18 months. During the first year the coat changes from soft puppy fluff to adult curls, and this is the stage when mats can form almost overnight, so short daily combing sessions are worth building into the routine early.
Some inherited problems in the breed show up very young. A benign form of juvenile epilepsy typically appears between about 5 and 9 weeks of age and usually fades by around 3 months, which is one reason to choose a breeder who DNA tests and keeps puppies until at least 8 weeks. Keep growing puppies lean and avoid long forced runs. Any seizure, tremor, loss of balance or odd behavior in a puppy calls for an immediate vet visit.
