How much exercise does a Rhodesian Ridgeback need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Rhodesian Ridgeback enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Adults need about 60 to 90 minutes of activity a day. Ridgebacks were built to trot for hours with bursts of real speed, so they enjoy long walks, hiking, canicross and, where it is safe, a flat-out run in a securely fenced field. Lure coursing, a sport in which dogs chase a mechanical lure around a field, is a brilliant outlet for the chase instinct.
Recall is the weak point. Many Ridgebacks will leave you far behind if a deer or cat bolts, and they are much faster than any person. Use a long line in open spaces unless your recall has been proven around real distractions. An under-exercised Ridgeback shows it through chewing, raiding counters and evening restlessness; an overdone youngster may look stiff or reluctant the next morning.
