Training a Saluki: what works and what to expect
How the Saluki learns, common training challenges and what motivates it.
Salukis are intelligent but independent. They were bred to hunt at a distance from people and make their own decisions, so doing what you ask is not their top priority. Short, positive sessions with high-value treats work best, and they switch off quickly with repetition or harsh words.
Recall is the breed's biggest training challenge, and many Salukis never become reliable off lead, however well they are trained. Focus on loose-lead walking, calm greetings and a strong settle at home. Use a long line in open areas, and accept that some limits come with the breed rather than seeing them as training failures.
