How much exercise does a Shiba Inu need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Shiba Inu enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Shibas are content with about 45 to 60 minutes of walking and play a day, but that time should include variety: new routes, sniffing along hedgerows and short bursts of flat-out running. Owners know those sudden laps of the garden as the Shiba 500. Because of the chase drive and independent streak, free running belongs in a securely fenced area, since many Shibas will bolt after a cat or squirrel and ignore every recall cue you have ever taught.
Use a well-fitted harness; some Shibas can back out of a flat collar in a second. Pacing, digging and chewing are signs of not enough activity. Overheating is a bigger risk than overexertion for such a dense coat, so shorten walks on hot, humid days and look for shade.
