Shiba puppies usually weigh about 3 to 4 kg (7 to 9 lb) at three months, reach close to adult height by 9 to 10 months and look fully grown at about a year. Males often keep broadening through the head and chest until around 18 months. The first big coat blow tends to arrive between 6 and 12 months and can alarm new owners with the sheer volume of fluff.
The biggest growth concern is behavioral rather than physical. The main socialization window closes at around 12 to 14 weeks, and Shibas that miss gentle, varied contact with people, handling and other dogs are more likely to become fearful or defensive adults. Touch paws, ears and mouth daily with a food reward for each touch. Knee problems can show up in young dogs, so a skipping or lifted hind leg is worth a vet check.
