Silky puppies grow quickly and reach adult size by about 10 to 12 months. At eight weeks they often weigh only around 1 kg (2.2 lb). The most noticeable change is color: puppies are born black and tan, and the dark coat gradually clears to the adult blue over the first year or so, often finishing at around 18 months.
Watch for dental problems during teething, especially retained baby teeth, which are common in small breeds and may need a vet's attention. Also watch for limping or skipping on a hind leg, which can signal knee or hip problems that sometimes appear during growth. Protect small joints by limiting jumps from furniture until the puppy is fully grown.
