How much exercise does a Kerry Blue Terrier need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Kerry Blue Terrier enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Kerries need about 60 minutes of activity a day, combining walks with play and brain work. They enjoy fetch, tug, agility, obedience, rally, earthdog trials and even herding instinct tests, a reminder of their farm past. Many are keen swimmers, which is worth knowing before a walk along a riverbank, since the soft coat takes a long time to dry.
Off-lead running works best in secure areas, because a Kerry may chase small animals or square up to a strange dog. Bored Kerries bark, dig and chew. Keep walks varied with plenty of sniffing time, and on rainy days swap part of the walk for 15 minutes of puzzle toys or hide-and-seek with treats so energy does not turn into mischief. After muddy walks, brush out burrs and debris before they work into tangles.
