The harsh coat needs relatively little care, but it does need some. Brush once a week with a slicker brush and comb, and hand-strip the dead coat two or three times a year to keep it wiry and weatherproof. Clipping softens the coat and weakens its protection, though many pet owners accept that trade-off for convenience.
Check the coat for burrs, seeds and ticks after every walk in the countryside. Rinse or wipe the beard daily, dry the ears after swimming, trim nails every three to four weeks, and bathe only when really needed, because frequent washing softens the coat.
