Finnish Spitz grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Finnish Spitz: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Under the harsh outer hair sits a soft, dense undercoat that insulates against cold. Brush once or twice a week with a pin brush and an undercoat rake. Once or twice a year the undercoat comes out in clumps over two to three weeks, and brushing daily during that stretch keeps your floors manageable.
The coat is fairly self-cleaning and has little odor, so baths are needed only a few times a year. Avoid shaving the coat for summer, because it insulates against heat as well as cold. Trim nails monthly and, in snowy weather, check between the toes for ice balls.
